Police have arrested 64 suspects and recovered several firearms and rounds of ammunition during an operation at a lounge near Achimota Mile 7 in the Greater Accra Region.
The operation was conducted by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police in collaboration with the National SWAT unit, following complaints from residents about alleged criminal activities at the lounge and its surrounding areas.
Residents had reportedly raised concerns over the open display and suspected sale of firearms at the location.
During the operation, police discovered a blue, unregistered Acura vehicle containing a pistol holster.
The vehicle was impounded and transported to Police Headquarters for further investigations after no one at the scene claimed ownership of the holster.
One of the suspects, identified as Theophilus Ashon, allegedly claimed to be a police officer attached to the Criminal Investigations Department’s Operations Unit.
Police checks, however, established that he was not a serving officer.
A search conducted on Ashon led to the recovery of a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Further investigations led police to Atico, where another suspect, Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills, was arrested. A search of his residence resulted in the recovery of three pump-action guns, four pistols, 62 AA and BB cartridges, 54 rounds of .40-calibre ammunition and other exhibits.
The suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations. They are expected to be put before the court after the completion of the investigations.
